Get Involved

If you are a high school student, parent, or teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area, a UC Berkeley student, or if you work for a company in the Bay Area, there are many ways for you to get involved with PiE!

High Schools

Participating in the PiE Robotics Competition is a great way for you to learn about engineering and college. Each team of students are assigned a handful of mentors who are currently UC Berkeley students to work closely with you throughout the season, so you will have many opportunities to hear about life at UC Berkeley first-hand and ask questions about college or life in general.

The PiE Robotics Competition takes place each Spring from around February to April. Applications for each season usually open in November and run until January. Learn how to start a Pioneers in Engineering robotics team at your school here.

UC Berkeley Students

There are two ways to get involved as a UC Berkeley student:

Become a PiE Staff Member

PiE staff are the ones who run the show: we create our very own robotics kit in-house, come up with the robotics challenge and build the field, and teach the mentors how to use our kit and how to effectively mentor a team. Our staff consists of graduate and undergraduate students across all majors, and no prior experience is necessary to join. Learn more about how to become a PiE staff member here.

Become a Mentor

Mentors enroll in our annual two-unit DeCal in the Spring. During the first few weeks of the course, we teach basic robotics and mentorship skills. The remainder of the course consists of mentoring your team either at their school or here at UC Berkeley. Mentoring is a fun and rewarding experience! Learn more about how to become a mentor here.

SFSU students: there is a satellite PiE chapter at your school, and we need you to mentor schools in the peninsula.

If you are an employee from an engineering or tech company in the Bay Area, we would love to have you as a volunteer! Here at PiE, we try to bridge the gap between high school students, college students, and industry professionals. Therefore, we invite professionals to help critique our kit hardware and software designs and give feedback for the high school robotics teams as well. Learn more about volunteering with PiE here.

Non-Berkeley College Students

We are currently expanding Pioneers in Engineering to other college campuses outside of UC Berkeley. Please email us at if you are interested in learning how to get involved.
